Integrating STEM Disciplines in the Student-Centered Classroom - Part 1

Presenter: Jason Porter Katherine Bihr

10:30 am - 11:15 am

Conference Workshop

The acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has been used to indicate many different school initiatives, often leaving educators unsure how to establish an effective STEM program in their classrooms.

Intentional professional learning can model best practices in student-centered, inquiry-based STEM learning and facilitate the transfer of these practices to an educator’s classroom.

Part 1 of this workshop will highlight an activity for the integrated learning of calculating surface-area to design a three-dimensional building from an appropriate material.

Participants will learn how math, science and engineering can be taught in a single-lesson, with an engaging, real-world connection to sustainable architecture. All participants will receive access to freely-available, online teaching resources, including the lesson plan for the activity in this workshop.
